So one of my good friends, Sanjana Eswar wrote this heart-felt and inspiring essay. I would like to share it with you.
Determination is a human instinct. It thrives inside one’s self, and encourages one to do what they desperately need to do to fulfill their happiness. It is an instinct which arises when we seemingly have lost hope. You give up, fall off the track and off the grid, but setting a new location and moving forward with determination helps you get back.
Determination helps one to work hard. Even if it is a difficult subject for you, having a set goal in mind can beat the cold hands of procrastination which sneak up and hold you back.
Determination and hard work go hand in hand. If there is motivation to do something, one cannot achieve it without hard work. If you don’t work hard when determined and reschedule the hard work to be done, (much like hitting the snooze button on your clock), it makes you lose track of time. And when you finally wake up, you’ve missed the school bus.
Determination is a steady fire in one’s self – it helps you get past your monsters. With a steady heart filled with it, one can not only defeat and extinguish them, but also befriend them.
I used to have a huge fear of speaking in front of an audience. I’ve always had a soft voice, and I’d be terribly nervous to speak. I would wondering if my thoughts would ever reach them. But, I decided to face my fear. I wrote my name down for debates, practiced in front of a mirror, just so that I could get over my fear.
It is not true that I’m completely over my fear. I had my vivas and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous. The familiar tinge of nervousness is like an old friend – always popping up to say “Hello”. But I have accepted it to be a part of me, and befriended my stage fright.
The gears of determination do not always have to be evoked by something directly – a simple line or even a fictional story can evoke it.
A friend of mine has a great love for theatre and drama, but decided to not pursue it due to the fear of rejection. She recently saw a movie named La La Land, which follows an aspiring actress, Mia, who follows her dreams. Mia gets rejected even when she tries her best, but accepts it as part of life and moves on till she succeeds. My friend got greatly inspired by Mia’s story, though its just a fictional story. She told me that she’s trying out for art colleges to get into theatre and pursue her dreams.
In conclusion, determination is a spirit inside. It can be awakened by the simplest of reasons and helps us follow our heart. With determination and hard work, one can get past their monsters and achieve their goals.
The images in this post are from the video game Undertale . The reason behind picking these images is that at each save point of the game, there’s a message saying: “You are filled with determination.” Also, Sanjana and I love Undertale!
