Recognize: A Poem

In response to today’s Daily Prompt.

She looked in the mirror,

What did she see?

A freckled face, hair tied into pigtails,

A pink band aid on her arm from when she fell from the swing at the park

“It was a good day”, she smiled and thought

She ran out of the door when the school bus honked.

She looked in the mirror,

What did she see?

A face full of make up, hair falling perfectly on her shoulders,

A stamp on her arm from when she was at the club

“It was a good day.”, she smiled and thought

She ran out of the door when a sports car honked.

She looked in the mirror,

What did she see?

A tired face, hair tied back into a bun

A pen mark on her arm from when she doodled at work

“It was a good day.”, she smiled and thought

She ran out of the door when a taxi honked.

She looked in the mirror

What did she see?

A nervous face, hair tied into a braid

A bouquet in her arms from when she threw it to other young women at her wedding

“It was a good day.”, she smiled and thought

She ran out of the door as a minivan honked.

She looked in the mirror

What did she see?

A bruised face, hair rough and messy

Scars on her arms from when her husband opened a bottle of wine at dinner time

“Tomorrow will be a good day.”, she smiled and thought

She ran out of the door as she heard his car pull up,

Muttering to herself, “I used to recognize myself, funny how reflections change.”
